Design revealed for new science and tech museum in Suzhou, China
The architecture firm Perkins+Will has revealed its sweeping design for the Suzhou Science & Technology Museum, which will serve as the centerpiece for a new cultural district in the city, located about 62 miles northwest of Shanghai.

The museum, which aims to draw visitors from around China and beyond, sets out to celebrate history and to inspire scientific interest in a new generation. The 600,000-square-foot museum features a terraced landscape and flowing design, elements that reflect its location at the foot of Lion Mountain and near Shishan Lake.

A 66,700-square-foot exhibition hall will feature exhibits highlighting the role of industrial development in enriching lives, thus highlighting Suzhou's role in China commercial history. The cty's current role at the forefront of technological innovation will also be a subject of the museum's exhibits and is referenced in the contemporary look of the building's design.

The museum has been conceived as a ribbon-like form creating an infinity loop, while metallic facades are said to evoke a silk scarf, one of Suzhou's major exports. On the lake, several man-made "Eco Islands" will create a space for environmental exploration and education.

Those entering the museum will find themselves in a three-story atrium adjacent to a sunken water-filled courtyard; on the museum's third level, a terrace will stretch out over the Eco Islands.

Outside, a "Life-Giving Forest" will provide a gathering and exhibit space, while public walkways will lead through the wetlands and Eco Islands where the museum meets the lake.

Perkins+Will likewise designed the Shanghai Natural History Museum, which opened in 2015. Dates have yet to be revealed for the construction and opening of the new Suzhou museum.
