Samsung Galaxy C7 seasoned vs Galaxy A5 (2017)

Samsung has launched Galaxy C7 Pro in India for Rs. 27,990. It will be available for purchase exclusively on Amazon starting from 11th April. Before we make opinions about the Galaxy C7 Pro, let us see how it stacks up against the likes of Galaxy A5 2017.

The Galaxy A5 2017 is priced very closely to the new C7 Pro, increasing the number of choices for Samsung loyalists. If the price is similar, then what is the difference? Lets find out.

Design and Build

C7 Pro comes with a unibody metal design. It is a rectangular slab made out if aluminum alloy with curves on the sides and edges, giving it a great in hand feel. It has noticeable bezels on the top and bottom, thus, further increasing the footprint of the device.

On the other hand, Samsung gave a refreshing look to A5 2017. Unlike C7 Pro, A5 2017 is mostly build using glass. A 2.5D curved Gorilla glass 3 is used to protect the display, and the rear part is carved out of a 3D Gorilla glass 4. The corners are well-rounded making it easy to handle the device with one hand. It is worth noting that A5 2017 is an IP 68 water/dust proof body. In a nutshell, A5 2017 got a flagship treatment from Samsung.

In terms of looks, both the devices look good but I personally liked the A5 2017 more than the C7 Pro. The smaller form factor may be another reason why the A5 2017 feels better in hand.

Display

While Galaxy C7 Pro sports a large 5.7-inch Super AMOLED Full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) screen with a pixel density of 386 ppi, A5 2017 rocks a relatively smaller 5.2-inch Super AMOLED Full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) display with a pixel density of 424 ppi. Bearing the screen size, both displays look strikingly identical.

Performance and Storage

C7 Pro is powered by a brand new Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 626 chipset that house an octa-core CPU with Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and Adreno 530 GPU. On the other hand, A5 2017 is powered by an in-house Exynos 7880 chipset that consists of an octa-core CPU with Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.9GHz and Mali-T830 GPU. Both processors are built using 14nm technology.

On the storage front, C7 Pro packs 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage with an option to expand the storage via microSD card (hybrid slot) upto 256GB. A5 2017 comes with 3GB RAM ad 32GB internal storage that can be expanded via microSD card ( dedicated slot) upto 256GB.

Overall, the C7 Pro takes the lead in performance and storage segment due to its marginally powerful processor and an extra gig of RAM.

Camera

Both phones come with 16MP f/1.9 camera setup on the front and the back. A dual-tone LED flash assists camera on C7 Pro; whereas, a single tone LED flash supports the camera on A5 2017. We haven't thoroughly tested the cameras; however, we expect them not to differ my a considerable margin.

Connectivity & Sensors
On the connectivity front, both devices support 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, GPRS, GPS/A-GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, Glonass, and USB Type-C for data transfer and charging. Both phones come with the same set of sensors: Fingerprint (front-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and compass.

Battery

C7 Pro is backed by 3300mAh battery, and A5 2017 comes with a slightly less capacious 3000mAh battery. Both devices come with fast charging support.

Looking at the on paper battery size, both the smartphones should have a similar battery backup. One of my team member is using the Galaxy A5 2017 and is getting a decent battery life from it.

Availability and Price
A5 is available in two color options: Black Sky and Gold. It is currently selling for 28,990. C7 Pro is released in two color variants: Navy Blue and Gold. The device will go on sale from 11th April for Rs. 27,990.

Verdict

A5 2017 excels in aesthetics and build; whereas, C7 Pro dominates in performance and storage department. The deal breakers you should look for are small footprint and IP68 rating on A5 2017 and 4GBRAM/64GB ROM combination and large display on C7 Pro. If you can ignore the brand name and after sales, OnePlus 3T offers an overall better package compared to A5 2017 or C7 Pro.
