Xiaomi set to launch Redmi 4 budget phones in India on March 20

Xiaomi Redmi 4

Xiaomi has sent out invitations for the launch of their new budget smartphones in the Redmi series. Successors to the Redmi 3s and Redmi 3s Prime, the new phones are expected to come with a price tag starting at Rs 4,999.
The launch event, scheduled for March 20 in New Delhi, could see as much as four Redmi devices announced by the company -- the Redmi 4, the Redmi 4 Prime, the Redmi 4X and the Redmi 4A.  But then it may not.
Redmi 4 series was launched in November in China and the Redmi 4X was launched recently with a Snapdragon 625 chipset. Since India already has a Xiaomi phone with that chipset -- Redmi Note 4 -- which China didn't, there are little chances that it will launch in India.
While the Redmi 4 with Snapdragon 430 and the Redmi 4 Prime with Snapdragon 625 care selling in China, both these phones with similar specs are already available as Redmi 3S and the Redmi Note 4 respectively. So there is no point launching it again in India.
Now, the Redmi 4A meanwhile is the cheapest of the series at CNY 499 (roughly Rs 4,929), and comes with an older Snapdragon 425 chipset, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Xiaomi may launch this as Redmi 4 and do its usual blow to the segment at Rs 4,999. The phone is said to have a 5-inch HD display but with dual SIM 4G Volte support.

The Redmi 4 Prime might launch as is (as the 'Prime' moniker is already used on the previous phone) but with different specs. In fact, the specs could be the same the Redmi 4X -- a 5-inch HD display topped with 2.5D glass and a Snapdragon 435 chipset under the hood with 3GB/32GB memory. Then it should also have a fingerprint sensor at the back; and the price tag could be similar to the Redmi 3S Prime at Rs 8,999.
Apart from a design refresh inspired by the Redmi Note series, the new budget phones are expected to get thinner metal unibody chassis, despite packing big batteries to the tune of 4100mAh. Also expect them to be lighter.
The phones will be Amazon exclusive and the online retail giant confirmed this via a tweet. But their prices are offcourse a secret right now. What we know, from their availability in China, is that the phones will be priced in the budget segment, spanning across the Rs 5000- Rs 10,000 price range.
