Another day, another tidbit of information about the Samsung Galaxy S8 , and this time it’s about the camera… except it’s nothing to do with image quality.
This rumor from Korean news site Naver suggests that the new Samsung phone will be capable of shooting at 1000 frames per second (fps), creating the beautiful slow-motion recording of the recently-unveiled Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs , which would obviously be a visually attractive feature to highlight during the launch.
Having tested the slo-mo capabilities on the Sony camera (which you can see in the video below) it’s more than a gimmick… you can take genuinely impressive videos to share on social media. This is something Samsung sorely needs, given it looks like the camera capabilities don’t look to be improved on the forthcoming model, according to the leaks.
What’s interesting is the rumor states Samsung isn’t using the same sensor as seen in the Sony smartphones, which one would have expected given Samsung has used the Japanese brand’s sensors in the past and the similarities in the functionality being outlined here.
The source claims that Samsung is pushing RAM into the camera sensor to allow for the extra capability, which is similar to what Sony is doing (sandwiching DRAM in the sensor stack, if you want to get technical about it) - so either Samsung has worked out how to create this feature in house, or it’s using a different Sony sensor to achieve the ultra-high frame capture.
What’s the iPhone got to do with it?
However, there are a few questions over whether Samsung will be using this feature - firstly, Naver has only sporadically nabbed information about forthcoming phones in the past, although it’s been getting more info on the new Galaxy S8 of late.
A source quoted by the site is stating that the iPhone 7 can only record at 120fps, which is inaccurate given Apple’s handset can manage 240fps.
However - it can shoot Full HD video at 120fps, and if Samsung could do the same thing seven times faster it would be a brilliant jump forward and outdo what Sony can manage - the quality difference between 1080p and 720p in slow motion video is marked.
