How Accel-backed Milofy is helping couples discover & meet like-minded couples

How Accel-backed Milofy is helping couples discover & meet like-minded couplesAccel Partners-backed couple socializing app Milofy aims to helps couples discover and socialize with like-minded couples around their location.

The app which was first launched in New York in September last year, made its India debut last week by launching in four cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru & Chennai.

Milofy which raised seed funding from Accel Partners in April 2015, matches couples based on their personality & interests and enables them to together explore local curated activities like comedy shows, theatre plays and music concerts among others. It is currently available as a free download on iOS and Android.

We tried the Android version and noticed that one can answer various questions regarding personal details and preferences about themselves and their partners across several parameters like couple personality, languages, field of work and travel among others.

At the moment, we noticed that some of the questions might seem out of place for users since they were not localized for India market yet.

Choosing couples to meet

The app then allows users to choose the type of couple they would like to meet - based on gender, nationality and relationship among other parameters. For instance, one can choose to meet couples who have kids or those who have pets.

Following this, Milofy provide users a list of like-minded couples around their location which one can browse through in a card-like format, with each of the cards indicating a compatibility percentage with the couple.

One can then tap on any couple card to start chatting with them and invite them to nearby activities. Alternatively, one can further filter these results to show only couples they are friends with or couples with mutual friends.

Milofy founder Arshya Lakshman told ETtech that one of the key challenge in matching couples has been ensuring all the four people get along well, for which they use various signals that users provides as mentioned above.

How Accel-backed Milofy is helping couples discover & meet like-minded couples"In Tinder, I match you and your wife but on Milofy, I am matching four people. Hence its quite possible that two people will get along and other two might not get along. So, we are currently focused on how to ensure all four people get along well" Lakshman said.

In order to build trust, the app has an option for users to view whether they have common friends with any couple on Facebook or its own platform. Apart from this, Lakshman said that users also have the option to reject requests in case they have been falsely named as partners by unknown users who will be booted out of the service if they fail to add another genuine partner to their profile.

Events tie-ups

For events, Milofy has tied-up with event aggregators like Eventbrite, Events High and they are currently in talks with several Indian partners to offer local nearby activities to couples.

Lakshman said they are listing activities on their platform for free as of now but they do plan to eventually take a commission on the activities booked from its platform in the future.

Going forward, Milofy also plans to enable couples host events and invite other couples as well as provide the ability to search other couples in coming weeks. The company claims to have more than 400 couples on its platform and has teams in New York, Chennai and Bengaluru.
