As per a new report, Apple and the Indian Government have finally come to an agreement with regards to manufacturing iPhones in India. This report says that Apple will start production of the iPhones in India within the next two months. Since Apple doesn’t directly produce the iPhones, a company like Foxconn will be responsible for the manufacturing.
Analyst reports have mentioned that this will allow Apple to price their smartphones cheaply, with the prices expected to come down by at least $100. Bear in mind, that Apple will only produce theiPhone SE in the country for the time being, with other products not in the pipeline as of yet. So you will probably end up paying the same amount for the flagship iPhone this year.
Apple is seemingly planning to manufacture some of its components in India as well. The company has asked the Government’s permission to get some tax breaks for importing components and goods for manufacturing and service/repair of phones. Apple has apparently asked the government to go easy on the mandatory rule to source at least 30% of the components locally. However, the government doesn’t seem to be in favor of this particular proposal.
While we haven’t received confirmation from Apple as of yet, this could be a landmark day for India and its Make in India initiative. With one of the top global companies setting up manufacturing in India, one can expect the government’s coffers to fill up handsomely, while also offering stable employment to thousands of Indians.
