Tech Tip: Play YouTube on Android phone when screen is locked

Launched in 2005, YouTube has today become a lot more than just a video streaming app for its users. A friend that sings for you when you are alone, a guide when you try your hands on cooking, a tutor, a teacher -- YouTube today plays multiple roles.

The video streaming app is used for sharing and uploading videos. This app is free and today has visitors watching around 6 billion hours of video every month. To play videos, you just have to type the name of the video in YouTube search bar and the video is there on your screen of the phone.

However, like most of the other apps, YouTube too has its own limitations. For instance, Android users cannot enjoy YouTube videos in the background. Say, if you want to play a song via YouTube and also do some other work in your phone, it is not possible. You can't exit the app and keep listening to the music. If you leave the YouTube app or turn off the screen while the video is playing, it will abruptly stop.

To cater to this problem, YouTube launched YouTube Red on 28 October 2015. It is a paid subscription by YouTube that allows you to play videos in the background. The app is only available in US for now. And did we say it requires subscription?

So what to do if you are not living in US or if you don't want to pay for the videos to run in the background. Simple, just follow this easy trick and you are done!

1. Download Mozilla Firefox app on your Android Phone. It is available in the Play store.

2. Once the installation is complete, open YouTube on the Firefox browser, not the app.

3. Select the YouTube video you wish to play.

4. Once the video starts playing, press the back button in your phone or switch off your screen if you want. The video would continue playing uninterrupted in the background.

So, sit back and relax with your hot mug of coffee, your favorite music is on!
