Reliance Jio criticizes Airtel for misleading media statements

Reliance Jio, the company behind the disruption in Indian telecom leaders has been in a feud with Airtel from past few months. Reliance Jio has slammed Airtel for its 'malicious and misleading' media statements in respect with the passable POI (Points of Interconnections) capacity to the company. POIs are used to connect calls between two different networks.

Airtel and other competing telcos got a major hit after Reliance Jio launched its services in India last year. Airtel has been the most active participant in opposing Reliance Jio’s free offers soon after its roll out. Jio accused Airtel for the call failures experienced by Jio users. On the other hand, Jio claims there is no technical issue with the network, as Jio users are easily able to connect call to other Jio numbers.

In a press statement given by Reliance Jio, the company has alleged that Airtel is engaged in a “mischievous and motivated campaign to divert attention from its anti-competitive and anti-consumer actions and violations of license conditions which are being investigated by the authorities.” The statement further says, “The fact is that over 2.6 crore NLD calls are still failing daily amounting to 53.4% call failure (as on 31-Jan-2017) as against TRAI norm of 0.5%.”

The statement also claims that Airtel is the only network behind restricting Jio users to enjoy the services provided by the company. It mentions, “Airtel has indulged in a completely arbitrary comparison of POIs allocated to other operators as against those allocated to RJIL. Traffic from no two operators will be alike and operators must not try to control the traffic from their customers. RJIL has passed on the benefits of a more efficient technology to its customers in the form of free voice services. Airtel did not invest in new technologies and is now trying to prevent customers from enjoying benefits of superior service offered by a new operator, while misleading customers and causing reputational damage to RJIL by claiming that there are technical issues in RJIL network. India’s telecom sector has tended to progress due to disruptive innovation brought in by newcomers, but unfortunately, Airtel is trying to block such initiatives.”

On Reliance Jio’s ‘Happy New Year offer’, Airtel was the only company to call it anti-competitive and raise an appeal with the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). The appeal requested an order on TRAI to ask Jio to stop its free services to regulate competition. Airtel looked at these services as a bait to poach customers. TRAI conducted a check on Reliance Jio’s free services and closed the issue with a clean chit to RJIL .

Reliance Jio has also addressed the foresaid allegations made by Airtel saying, “Airtel’s insinuation that RJIL has not complied with TRAI’s tariff orders is bizarre and defamatory considering that TRAI has already responded to its complaints by stating categorically that RJIL’s tariffs are compliant with the tariff orders of TRAI and other applicable regulations.”
