Things are not going well in Nikon, a well known photographic equipment manufacturer, which is considered to be as one of the best camera company. Nikon has signaled today that it will cancel its new family of premium DL compact cameras, which was introduced last June and have to delay indefinitely its launch due to problems with the integrated circuit for image processing.
The DL family consisted of three cameras, the DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8, the DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8, and the superzoom DL24-500 f/2.8-5.6, where they all had in common the availability of Sensor of 20.8 MP with a size of the same one inch, being the same sensor used also in the Nikon 1 family, which is not going through its best moments precisely, as their sales are still stagnant. This family wanted to compete with premium compact cameras from manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic, and even with Fujifilm models.
In fact, the DL24-85 was intended to compete head-to-head with Sony’s RX100 Mark V while its superzoom was meant to compete head-to-head with Sony’s RX10 III.
Nikon argues that the cancellation of the DL family is due to the fact that it does not see it viable due to high development costs and the fall in the number of sales due to the slowdown of the market. Nikon has not found stable accommodation in the space of premium compact cameras , so they will continue betting on classic SLR cameras to continue forward.
And to move forward, Nikon also said that it will carry out a restructuring in which it intends to eliminate 1,000 employees by voluntary redundancies, considering that their sales have also fallen by 8.2% compared to last year.
