Rumors have been swirling that Moto will announce the Moto G5 lineup at MWC 2017, and thanks to a rather sizeable retailer leak, we might have just had our first look.
Based on information and images that we’ve seen thus far, the two devices leaked do indeed seem to be the Moto G5 andMoto G5 Plus . And looking more closely at the devices and their specs show that in some ways, much has changed. But in a few other key ways, things haven’t changed all that much since the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus.
Both the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus as seen in the leaked images appear to rock a more premium design than their predecessors, ditching the charming, but utilitarian grippy back for a smooth metallic build.
Most notably, the G5 appears to be gaining a new trick if this leaks holds truth: a fingerprint sensor. Appearing only on the Moto G4 Plus , it looks like the biometric feature is making its way to the budget device, which is something that Sony has yet to make happen for even its most expensive smartphones in the US.

Mods, specs and more
What remains to be seen is if the new lineup will support Moto Mods . The leaked devices showcase a circular camera bulge like the Moto Z , but not contact points for the mods. However, the possibility is there as the G5 seems to support removable batteries and thus, could be hiding the port beneath. This ability remains to be seen with the G5 Plus.
Adding mod support for low-endphones would surely give Moto’s initiative more legs than just reserving it for its flagship models.
Now, for the phones’ respective specifications. Surprisingly, the Moto G5 seems to be lacking in the chipset department, opting for the Snapdragon 430 versus last year’s Snapdragon 617. It’s also smaller at five inches at 1080p (FHD) resolution compared to the 5.5-inch Moto G4 .
We’ll also see this one getting 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, microSD support, Android Nougat and the full suite of usual sensors.

The Moto G5 Plus, too, will be smaller: just 5.2 inches at FHD compared to 5.5 inches. But compared to the G5, the G5 Plus appears to be quite the improvement over last year’s model. That’s mostly due to the Snapdragon 625, which we’ve seen put to good use in the Moto Z Play , Huawei Nova and ZTE Blade V8 Pro . It’s not blazing fast considering our soon-to-be Snapdragon 835 -filled world, but it’s certainly an upgrade worth getting excited about.
Otherwise, this model looks to stock a bigger battery than the G5 (3,000mAh vs 2,800mAh). It also doubles the amount of internal storage to 64GB (microSD support included) and offers NFC for Android Pay support. If Moto can keep the price down, this Nougat device could reign supreme as the best cheap phone .
Looking at these two phones, it’s hard to see where a “Play” variant can fit in. The G5, with its lesser chipset and lack of NFC could very well occupy the price point of the Moto G4 Play , which in turn could reduce the price of the Moto G5 Plus.
