The LG G6 is all set for an unveiling at the Mobile World Congress later this year. A new leak has revealed that the handset will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 SoC, and not the Snapdragon 835 as one would have imagined. This is a bit of a surprise as the Snapdragon 821 was unveiled last year as a slightly upgraded version of the Snapdragon 820. It’s a quad-core processor, that comes with a slightly improved clock-speed, but not much else on board.
It was hoped that new devices in 2017 will be powered by the Snapdragon 835, the octa-core chip that’s been revealed by Qualcomm already. But by packing in the Snapdragon 821 on the device, it seems like theLG G6 is at a disadvantage here.
The leaked slide, apparently from a LG presentation (SemiAccurate), also reveals the existence of water and dust resistance, which will be a first for an LG flagship. The display is said to be 5.7-inches in size, although the resolution hasn’t been specified. The phone will also come with Quad DAC (digital to analog converter), which will significantly boost the handset’s audio credentials.
Overall, it seems like LG will have to market the G6 very hard in order to make it a success in the market. Things will be particularly difficult for the company if Samsung or HTC unveil their flagships with Snapdragon 835 on board. We’re still not quite sure about the reasoning behind using a Snapdragon 821 chipset in a new flagship, but one theory is that LG probably doesn’t want to rush it with a new chipset so as to avoid a situation similar to the Snapdragon 810 fiasco from a couple of years ago.
