LG unveiled its new G6 smartphone on Sunday at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. With the release of the G6, the struggling phone maker hopes it can regain some market share from the likes of Apple and Samsung. The G6 succeeded the G5 smartphone, which was released last year but failed to make any impact in the premium segment.
LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch “Full Vision” QHD+ display with an unusual 18:9 aspect ratio which is HDR 10 and Dolby Vision HDR capable. The company claims that most entertainment content on the Google Play Store already supports the 18:9 aspect ratio, but LG is also adding a “zoom mode” for unsupported content.
Thanks to the reduced bezels, the company the G6 has the footprint of a 5.2-inch phone. The phone has a metal body and a glass back. In terms of dimensions, the G6 end up 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9mm while tipping the scales at 163g.
The G6 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB RAM, Hi-Fi DAC, and a fingerprint scanner. It is also resistant to dust and water and even boasts a proprietary heat dissipation technology. There’s a 3,300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support delivered through the Type C port. There will be wireless charging support, but unfortunately, only in the US variant.
Like the G5, the G6 has a dual camera system. This time however, they’re both the same 13-megapixel sensor There’s also a wide angle lens on the front of the phone, with a 5-megapixel sensor capturing the images. The phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat. The G6 features a new user interface (UX 6) that takes advantage of the new 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone will also come with the Google Assistant built-in.
LG has announced that the G6 will be available in three color variants: Mystic White, Astro Black, and Ice Platinum. The phone will go on sale in South Korea soon. LG hasn’t unveiled pricing details for specific markets as of yet.
