If one is heading towards the Kempegowda International Airport from Bengaluru City, an electronic signboard at Hebbal now tells you exactly how long the journey will take.
Known as the Variable Messaging System (VMS), this cloud-based next generation technology , installed on Thursday, provides real-time information on traffic congestion, alternative routes and parking availability among others.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police in association with 3M has installed this signboard at Hebbal junction, which is seeing heavy traffic flow due to Aero India 2017, at the Air Force base in Yelahanka.
The system, which works without manual intervention, informs commuters about congestion, journey time, weather and also serves as a single-window medium for dispatching emergency information.
The system also picks up information from road-side sensors to provide real time parking information, besides suggesting alternate routes to reach their destination sooner. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R Hithendra, said this is a pilot project. “If the feedback is good, we are considering buying these signs and installing them in at least 40 locations,“ he said. The cost of the project has apparently not been finalised.
This automated information system could replace old systems which required manual feeds from the control room. “The 3M Smart Variable Message Signs can also integrate emergency messages across police, fire, ambulance and others,“ said Atul Shukla, Vice President, Traffic Safety and Security Business, 3M India.
