Google started rolling out Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta to all compatible devices just a few days ago. One of the compatible devices, the Nexus 5X is receiving a much requested feature: a swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to reveal notifications. There was much controversy back in November over why last generation’s Nexus devices were not receiving the ‘Swipe for notifications’ gesture. Despite the Pixel featuring the exact same fingerprint sensor, Android 7.1 did not bring over the useful feature to the Nexus 5X and 6P.
If you own a Nexus 5X you will notice there is a new option under Settings -> Moves. There’s a new Swipe for notifications toggle that enables you to swipe down on the fingerprint sensor on the back of the 5X to drop down the notifications. Nexus 6P users haven’t got the latest beta release yet, but this feature is likely to be introduced for them as well, whenever the release hits. And it works as intended and better than any third-party app implementation.
There’s not much else to the update in terms of new and visible changes despite it being a heavy 1252.4 MB.
Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta version is arriving for Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, and Pixel C devices as of now, while the company has confirmed that an update for Nexus 6P can be expected to be released soon. The Android 7.1.2 public beta images are also available to download for compatible devices. The final release of the Android 7.1.2 Nougat is expected to be made available in a couple of months.
