NEW DELHI: Popular Twitter humourist Abhishek Asthana who goes by the handle @GabbbarSingh was briefly suspended on Tuesday. This was the result of a copyright takedown notice. Although reinstated within a few hours, the suspension created a stir with many on Twitteroutraging over what they deemed an arbitrary suspension.
Asthana, who enjoys a follower count of over 4.3 lakh, had received a notification mail from Twitter on Tuesday morning. It quoted a tweet of his on the latest Karan Johar film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The tweet featured a video of people bursting crackers inside a Malegaon theatre at the screening of the film. Under the details of the takedown notice in the mail, of which TOI has a copy, distributor Fox Star Studios was listed as the copyright owner.
The video in question was circulated by several handles on Twitter on Monday, as the fire safety hazard made headlines on news portals elsewhere.
On visiting the link to @GabbbarSingh's reported tweet now, one gets a "Tweet withheld" message.
The mail from Twitter had asked Asthana to file a "counter notification" in case there was a mistake. However, exactly two minutes later, before Asthana could do the same, he received another email saying his account had been suspended. "Twitter has received multiple, compliant DMCA takedown notices for content posted to your Twitter account. As a result, we're temporarily suspending your account as a warning. If you'd like your account to be restored, please respond to this notice with confirmation that you understand Twitter's Copyright Policy," the mail said.
"A counter-notification involves a lot of paperwork. I had no time to do that," he told TOI. Asthana later posted a screenshot of yet another Twitter mail from his newly restored account. It said: "After further review, your account does not appear to be in violation of the Twitter Rules"
