The smartphone market is flooded with Chinese-made budget handsets, which have all the specifications required to take on the major players (read Apple, Samsung and now Google). So much is the influx of these Chinese devices, that the budget smartphone category has been subdivided further. Now there is a low budget, a middle budget and a high budget class distinction. And Honor's new entrant - the Honor 8 fits just in between the middle and higher budget categories. A stylish metal frame, decent cameras and a price tag of Rs 29,999 - Is it worth the investment? Here's our detailed review of the handset.

Design

The Honor 8 comes with 15 panels of light reflecting glass body and a fine metal frame which give it a premium look - one that's easily comparable to high-end handsets. The IR sensor is located at the top while the USB type-C port is located at the bottom with a mono speaker grille and the headphone jack. The hybrid SIM-card slots are on the left edge while the volume rocker and the power button are on the right. The rear panel houses the dual (colour + monochrome) cameras with the fingerprint sensor placed right at the centre. Unlike other dual camera phones, the Honor 8 doesn't have a protruding camera which actually compliments its design.

However, on the flipside, the metallic glass body is a fingerprint magnet. Apart from attracting smudges, the device is also slippery and hence it does get a bit difficult for one to get a firm grip without an anti-slip cover. Having said that, the device does seem to have a solid build quality; remaining intact even after a hard hitting fall from about 3-4 ft.

Performance and Camera

Sporting a 5.2 inch full HD (1080x1920) LTPS capacitive touch screen display, the Honor 8 runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0 with the company's custom Emotion UI 4.1. The display is sharp, colours vibrant, and its user interface resembles an iPhone; along with a few interesting features, such as smart controller, and gesture-based controls.

The device is powered by the company's home-grown HiSilicon Kirin 950 octa-core processor which performs equally well with heavy apps. We played some heavy games like the Immortals and the Justice League, no doubt the experience was brilliant without any heating issues. Although the device does support quick charge, it tends to heat up if kept on charge support for long.

The handset has a 4GB RAM with 32GB internal storage, expandable using a micro SD card. On the connectivity front, it supports a dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, along with Bluetooth 4.2, USB OTG, and NFC. It also supports 4G LTE for FDD and TDD bands; although VoLTE is currently not supported in India, the company claims to make it available via a software update soon. The call quality was decent enough. However, it hugely depends on the network connectivity in the area.

Talking about the camera, the 12MP (colour + monochrome) camera and 8 MP front shooter performed fairly well. It would be pertinent to point out that Honor's parent Huawei has done away with the 'Leica' branding. The dual camera gives you access to aperture, thereby rendering a Bokeh effect to your images - blurring the background as required. Within its camera app, the professional mode lets you toggle between ISO and aperture thereby helping you click better pictures even in low light conditions.

The ultra sensitive fingerprint sensor also functions as a 'Smart Key' - acting as an actual physical button to which you can map other applications for quick access. With the fingerprint sensor you can also view images without using your thumb on the screen - making it convenient for users.

The audio output was good, though it could have been a bit better, given the fact that it comes integrated with DTS technology. The 3,000mAh battery will last almost an entire day on a single charge, and with quick charge support you can get up to 40-45% of backup within 25-35 minutes.

Verdict

In simple words, the Honor 8 is a cheaper version of the Huawei P9. At the price point it sports, getting a dual camera is difficult on other handsets. However, smartphones aren't just limited to a dual camera or a decent design - other competing brands possess a larger fan base than the Honor 8. With its specifications, the handset is taking on the likes of the OnePlus 3 and Moto Z Play. And to some extent the Honor 8 does manage to stay in the hunt. With more and more Chinese manufacturers, what will be more interesting to see is how Huawei maintains its 'Honor'.
