This unique accessory allows multiple users to wirelessly access content saved on a connected storage drive through a smartphone or tablet
Sharing movies with friends and family members can be a lot easier if you can put them all at one place which can be wirelessly accessed on a number of devices. Strontium Mobile WiFi Cloud is a perfect fit for such a scenario as it allows users to create a private cloud network for home users and access content saved on any of your own external hard drive, flash drive or an SD card. It works with all Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.
How to set up
The Mobile WiFi Cloud creates a local wireless network of its own once you press the backlit button on the top. When the network is ready to use, the blue coloured backlit button will stop blinking automatically.
To connect it to your smartphone or tablet, simply go to the WiFi settings and look for the network called Strontium WiFi Cloud and connect your device to the network. Then download the Strontium WiFi cloud app, which is free to download and use, from the Play Store if you are an Android user or from the Apple App Store if you are an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad user. Once the app is installed, go to the app and you can see all the USB based drives or SD memory cards connected to the Strontium WiFi Cloud.
The Cloud network’s user interface is pretty archaic and looks like an old file manager of some Android smartphone. The same goes for the device’s looks. Though well-built and stable, it is a very ordinary looking device. To ensure your data remains safe and inaccessible to a snooping neighbour, you can protect it with a password just as you would do with any other WiFi network.
It comes with a built-in 3,000mAh battery that lasts about 6 hours of continuous use.
Takes time to start but works well after
The Mobile WiFi Cloud takes a little time before buffering and streaming HD content from the drive connected to it, but once the playback rolls, there is hardly any interruption. Music playback and photo slideshow is spot on and works almost instantly. The network reach is good: We had the device on the first floor and managed to stream content on a smartphone on the ground floor.
The device doesn’t have its own internal storage which means you have to connect a drive to it every time you wish to make it available to others.
Is it worth buying?
This device is perfect for a small household with multiple smartphone users and a single common hard drive with plenty of music and movies in it. What strengthens its case is the price. At Rs. 4,999, it is one of the most affordable ways of creating a private cloud. A proper cloud storage device with inbuilt storage, like the Seagate Satellite Mobile with 500GB storage, would cost about Rs. 15,000.
